Chapter 9 - LUCY'S OWN BLINDNESS
Lucy wanted to say she knew nothing.
Rachel stopped her.
“You knew he was using your credit for the van.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he had debt.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he gambled sometimes.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you check?”
Lucy looked down.
Because checking meant conflict.
Adrian became defensive whenever money came up.
He would say:
“Do you want me to work or do paperwork?”
“Everything I do is for this family.”
“You’re acting like I’m your employee.”
Lucy learned to avoid.
She managed:
Emiliano,
groceries,
laundry,
her part-time medical billing job.
Adrian managed:
rent,
utilities,
banking,
insurance.
Division of labor became a blindfold.
Rachel said:
“That doesn’t make the unauthorized debt your fault.”
Lucy nodded.
“But?”
“But going forward, you need to know your own financial life.”
