Chapter 4 - ADRIAN'S VERSION
Adrian hired attorney Lauren Pierce.
Lauren did not deny the accounts immediately.
She said Lucy knew about the business.
Lucy said she did not.
Then Lauren produced text messages.
ADRIAN:
If I can get the van route, we could finally get ahead.
LUCY:
Do whatever you need. I’m tired of drowning.
Another:
ADRIAN:
Need your info for the application.
LUCY:
It’s in the drawer.
Lucy remembered.
He had told her he was applying for a family health-insurance subsidy and vehicle financing.
He had asked for:
Social Security card,
tax return,
ID copy.
She gave them to him.
Then one message:
ADRIAN:
I may have to put it under your credit because mine is wrecked.
LUCY:
I don’t care. Just don’t make it worse.
Lucy went still.
Rachel asked:
“Did you send that?”
“Yes.”
“What did you think it meant?”
“The van.”
Not a company.
Not multiple credit lines.
Not a $92,000 business loan.
But Adrian now had a partial consent narrative.
He had not invented Lucy from nothing.
He expanded a vague permission until it covered whatever he wanted.
