The confrontation began over a gate latch.
Emma had been told to close the side paddock gate.
She thought she did.
The latch did not catch.
One calf wandered into the outer yard.
No animal was harmed.
No vehicle was moving.
The calf was guided back within minutes.
Diane exploded.
“You never listen!”
Emma said:
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry doesn't fix anything.”
Rachel was outside in the wheelchair.
Watching.
Emma moved toward her.
Diane grabbed the wooden manure shovel.
Not a metal blade.
Wooden.
She swung it low.
Struck Emma across the lower leg.
Emma cried out.
That was the line Rachel had been waiting for.
Not hoping for.
Waiting to see whether Diane would cross.
Rachel stood.
The shock on Diane’s face answered everything.
