Chapter 6 - THE POWER OF ATTORNEY
The answer arrived by mail.
A durable power-of-attorney packet.
Prepared by attorney Charles Wynn.
Rachel had never hired him.
The draft would give Diane broad authority over:
farm banking,
livestock sales,
equipment financing,
crop contracts,
insurance claims.
Rachel called Wynn.
He sounded confused.
“Mrs. Miller told me you requested assistance because of your medical limitations.”
“I did not.”
Silence.
“She said you were having difficulty managing business matters.”
“I am sitting in a wheelchair, not unconscious.”
Wynn immediately stopped the file.
No signature had been obtained.
No authority transferred.
That mattered.
Diane had not stolen the farm.
She was trying to create a structure where Rachel would sign control away voluntarily.
Why?
Diane later said:
“Because you were overwhelmed.”
Maybe partly true.
But Rachel found another reason.
