Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR'S SECRET

Rachel called Dr. Melissa Carter, her obstetrician.

“I need you to tell me something clearly.”

“What?”

“If I stand and walk now, am I risking the pregnancy?”

Dr. Carter reviewed her scans and exam.

“No. You should still avoid heavy lifting and strenuous farm work, but you are not medically unable to walk.”

Rachel leaned back.

“So the wheelchair is optional now.”

“For distance and comfort, yes.”

Rachel told her what she suspected.

Diane hurting Emma.

Only when Rachel looked helpless.

Emma suddenly afraid to speak.

Dr. Carter’s expression changed.

“Do not put yourself in danger to prove something.”

“I’m not planning to.”

Rachel contacted attorney Megan Holt.

Megan told her the same thing.

“Evidence matters. But do not manufacture an assault.”

Rachel answered:

“I won’t.”

She made one decision.

For several more days, around Diane, Rachel would remain in the wheelchair.

Not because she was crippled.

Because Diane behaved differently when she believed Rachel could not physically intervene.

That difference mattered.
