Chapter 2 - THE ACCIDENT THAT DIDN'T PARALYZE HER

Three weeks earlier, Rachel had fallen from the lower step of a tractor.

Not dramatic.

Not life-changing.

She twisted her hip badly and developed severe pelvic pain.

Rachel was also nineteen weeks pregnant.

Her obstetrician ordered:

rest,

limited lifting,

reduced farm work,

temporary wheelchair use for long distances.

Temporary.

That word mattered.

Within nine days, Rachel could stand.

Within twelve, she could walk short distances normally.

Diane knew Rachel had improved.

At least partly.

But Diane kept telling everyone:

“Rachel can barely move.”

At first Rachel thought her mother was being overprotective.

Then strange things started happening.

Farm vendors stopped calling Rachel.

Feed invoices went directly to Diane.

Two livestock buyers asked Diane for approval instead of Rachel.

The bank mailed an account-access request Rachel had never made.

And Emma became quieter.

Much quieter.

Whenever Rachel asked:

“Is Grandma being mean?”

Emma said:

“No.”

Too fast.

Rachel noticed bruises on Emma’s shin.

Emma said:

“I fell near the barn.”

Another bruise.

“I bumped the gate.”

Then Rachel overheard Diane from the kitchen.

“Stop crying before your mother hears you.”

Rachel rolled into the hallway.

Diane smiled.

“Nothing.”

Emma wiped her face.

Rachel knew then.

Something was wrong.
