Chapter 14 - EMMA RETURNS TO THE BARN

Emma’s leg was bruised.
No fracture.
She stayed away from the barn for two weeks.
Then one afternoon, she asked:
“Can we see Clover?”
Rachel hesitated.
“Yes.”
They walked together.
Rachel walked slowly because pregnancy still made her tired.
No wheelchair.
Emma noticed.
“Were you pretending the whole time?”
Rachel answered carefully.
“I was hurt at first.”
“But then you could walk.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell Grandma?”
Rachel stopped.
“I needed to understand what she was doing when she thought I couldn’t stop her.”
Emma thought about that.
“Was that lying?”
Rachel did not dodge.
“A little.”
Emma looked surprised.
“Was it okay?”
Rachel said:
“It was not something I want to do again.”
Then:
“I should have protected you sooner.”
Emma reached for her hand.
Rachel squeezed back.

No heroic excuse.
Just responsibility.
