Chapter 4 - EMMA'S NOTEBOOK

Emma kept a small school notebook inside her backpack.

Rachel found it while looking for a permission slip.

Most pages were normal.

Spelling words.

Math problems.

Drawings of horses.

Then:

GRANDMA RULES

1. NO CRYING IN THE BARN.

2. DON'T TELL MOM SMALL THINGS.

3. WORK FIRST, SNACK AFTER.

4. IF MOM ASKS, SAY I FELL.

5. MOM NEEDS REST. DON'T UPSET HER.

Rachel sat completely still.

Emma came into the room.

Saw the notebook.

Her face changed.

“Are you mad?”

“No.”

“Grandma said those rules help the baby.”

Rachel swallowed.

“How?”

“She said if you get upset, the baby could get hurt.”

Rachel’s stomach turned cold.

Diane had not merely intimidated Emma.

She had made the child believe silence protected her unborn sibling.

That explained everything.
