Chapter 5 - DIANE TAKES OVER THE FARM
The Miller farm had belonged to Rachel’s late father.
After his death, Rachel inherited:
the farmhouse,
118 acres,
livestock,
equipment,
operating accounts.
Diane inherited a smaller cash portfolio and lifetime use of a cottage on the property.
The farm itself belonged to Rachel.
But after Rachel’s accident, Diane stepped in.
At first legitimately.
She coordinated:
feed orders,
veterinary visits,
equipment repair,
payroll for two seasonal workers.
Rachel appreciated it.
Then Diane began signing things.
Not contracts she had authority to sign.
But vendor acknowledgments.
Delivery approvals.
Livestock reservation sheets.
One cattle buyer sent Rachel a copy of an email.
DIANE:
Rachel is effectively incapacitated for the foreseeable future. Route all farm decisions through me.
The buyer answered:
Do you have formal authority?
DIANE:
We're handling that.
Rachel stared at the words.
