Chapter 8 - WHY DIANE HATED EMMA'S QUESTIONS

Emma loved the animals.
She knew every cow by tag color.
She also listened.
One afternoon she heard Diane tell the cattle buyer:
“Rachel will sign once she realizes she has no choice.”
Emma asked:
“Why does Mom have no choice?”
Diane snapped:
“Stay out of adult business.”
Emma asked Rachel later:
“Are you selling Clover?”
Clover was Emma’s favorite cow.
Rachel said:
“No.”
Diane heard.
That evening, Emma was assigned to clean the tack area.
Too much work for an eight-year-old.
Not dangerous by itself.
But punishment disguised as chores.
When Emma moved slowly, Diane insulted her.
When Emma cried, Diane threatened:
“Do you want your mother to lose the baby?”
Emma stopped crying.
Rachel finally understood why Diane had become harsher.

Emma was not just a child Diane wanted to control.
She was a witness who asked questions.
