Chapter 1 - YOU DON'T BELONG HERE

Marcus Reynolds tore Maya Kincaid’s nameplate from the executive leadership board in front of the entire ballroom.

Metal hit wood.

Then the plaque slid across the podium.

“You don’t belong here.”

The room went silent.

Maya stood in formal military JAG uniform, spine straight, expression controlled.

Marcus looked at the uniform and smiled like it offended him personally.

Then he leaned toward the microphone.

“You live off this firm’s charity.”

A few guests looked away.

Others stared.

Julian Croft, senior board adviser, did neither.

He watched Marcus.

Then Maya.

Evelyn Kincaid, Maya’s stepmother, sat near the front with a small, satisfied smile.

Maya took one step forward.

Her jaw tightened.

“Humiliate me one last time.”

Marcus’s smile widened.

Maya turned and walked out.

The ballroom doors slammed behind her.

Her phone vibrated before she reached the end of the hallway.

Unknown secure number.

She answered.

A male voice said:

“Major Kincaid?”

“Yes.”

“This is Captain Daniel Reeves, legal liaison on the trust fraud referral.”

Maya stopped.

“What happened?”

He did not soften it.

“Marcus Reynolds stole your $450,000 trust distribution.”

Maya froze.

Then:

“He forged the DNA claim.”

For the first time that night, humiliation disappeared from Maya’s face.

She opened her bag.

Pulled out the sealed DNA report she had received that afternoon.

Then the financial audit folder.

She turned back toward the ballroom.

When Maya pushed through the doors, Marcus saw the papers in her hand.

His smile vanished.

She crossed directly to the podium.

SLAMMED both folders down.

Marcus reached.

Maya pinned them beneath her palm.

“DNA proved you lied.”

Marcus stopped moving.

May you like

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

And Julian Croft finally leaned forward.
