Chapter 8 - EVELYN'S ROLE

Everyone assumed Evelyn helped Marcus.
At first.
She had smiled when Maya’s nameplate came down.
She had privately complained for years that Charles favored Maya.
But Evelyn’s motive was complicated.
If Maya ceased being a biological beneficiary, Evelyn would not receive the entire trust.
The assets would pass under a fallback provision to:
the Kincaid Education Foundation.
Not Evelyn.
She had no direct $450,000 gain.
So why support Marcus?
Because she believed the first DNA result.
And because she resented Maya.
Evelyn later admitted:
“I thought Charles lied to me.”
“About what?”
“About everything.”
She had interpreted Maya’s supposed non-paternity as proof her marriage had been built on secrets.
Marcus fed that wound.

He did not need to pay Evelyn.
He only needed her anger.
