Evelyn asked Maya to lunch.
She said:
“I believed the test.”
Maya answered:
“You believed Marcus.”
“I believed the paper.”
“You enjoyed what it did to me.”
Evelyn looked away.
That was the harder truth.
She said:
“I was angry at your father.”
“So you punished me.”
“I suppose.”
Maya did not offer forgiveness.
Evelyn did not ask properly.
