Chapter 15 - THE UNIFORM

One year later, Maya returned to the same ballroom.
Different event.
Kincaid Strategic Holdings had completed its governance restructuring.
Julian Croft remained adviser.
An independent trust committee replaced Marcus’s role.
Related-party vendor disclosures became mandatory.
Maya accepted a non-operating board seat.
Not because she needed the company.
She still served as a military JAG attorney.
That mattered more to her than Marcus ever understood.
At the reception, a junior executive approached.
He looked at Maya’s uniform.
Then at the leadership board.
Her nameplate was back.
He said:
“Marcus used to say you were only here because of your father.”
Maya smiled.
“My father is why the trust exists.”
“And the board?”
“That I earned separately.”
The executive nodded.
Across the room, Julian raised a glass.
Maya looked at the plaque.
A year earlier Marcus had ripped it down and said:
You don’t belong here.
He had tried to make her identity conditional.
Daughter if DNA allowed it.
Leader if he approved it.
Beneficiary if his paperwork permitted it.
The forged test failed.
The reserve was exposed.
The money returned.
But that was not the real ending.
Maya adjusted one cuff on her formal uniform.
She had spent years proving cases for other people.
This one taught her something simpler.
Documents matter.
Evidence matters.
Chain of custody matters.
But no one person gets to decide your entire identity by controlling the file.
A waiter passed.
Maya took a glass of water.
Julian joined her.
“Ready for the board photo?”
Maya looked once at the nameplate.
Then away.
“Yes.”
She walked toward the group.
Not because Marcus had been defeated.
May you like
Because he had been removed from the position where his lie could define her.
