Chapter 2 - THE FOUNDER'S TRUST

Maya’s father, Charles Kincaid, founded Kincaid Strategic Holdings forty-two years earlier.
Corporate law.
Defense contracting.
Infrastructure advisory.
Private investments.
The firm was worth hundreds of millions.
But the $450,000 did not come from the company.
It came from the Kincaid Family Continuity Trust.
Charles created it after his first wife died.
Maya was his only biological child.
At least, that was what every legal document said.
The trust provided annual distributions to Maya and separate education and medical reserves for future descendants.
After Charles died, Evelyn became income beneficiary of one smaller marital trust.
Maya retained direct beneficial rights under the continuity trust.
Marcus was not a beneficiary.
He was outside counsel.
Then special adviser.
Then trust liaison.
That was how he got close enough.
Three years after Charles died, Marcus raised a “paternity irregularity.”
He claimed a former employee had discovered medical records suggesting Charles may have been infertile around the time Maya was conceived.
The allegation was humiliating.
But legally relevant because the trust defined primary beneficiary as:
CHARLES KINCAID’S BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANT MAYA KINCAID.
Maya agreed to DNA confirmation.

She thought certainty would end the issue.
Instead, it nearly erased her inheritance.
