Chapter 5 - MAYA'S SECOND TEST

Maya never believed the first result emotionally.

But emotion was not evidence.

She did what military law had taught her.

She rebuilt the chain.

First:

her own sample.

Second:

a preserved toothbrush from Charles’s sealed estate effects.

Not perfect.

Contamination possible.

Third:

a stored blood card from an executive physical Charles completed twelve years earlier.

That sample had been retained by a private medical concierge service.

Independent lab.

Independent courier.

Independent witnesses.

No Marcus.

The result:

99.997% probability of biological relationship consistent with father-daughter.

Maya did not cry when she read it.

She called the trust’s independent counsel.

Then a military ethics contact because Marcus had also tried to use the DNA dispute to attack her security-clearance disclosures.

That brought Captain Reeves into the matter.

Then the first lab reopened its file.

Something was wrong.
