Chapter 1 - WHOSE CHILD IS THIS

The metal wash basin struck Elena Hart across the forehead.

She cried out and stumbled.

One hand flew to her head.

The other wrapped around her eight-month belly.

Her knees hit the marble foyer.

Margaret Hart stood over her in an ivory silk blouse and tailored skirt.

“Wash my feet.”

Elena stared up.

For one second, the old woman’s face looked almost calm.

That frightened her more than shouting.

Margaret slipped one shoe off.

Then the other.

“Now.”

Elena’s forehead burned.

Her back ached.

Her ankles had been swollen for a week.

Still, she dragged the basin closer.

Not because she agreed.

Because Margaret had been circling her for nearly an hour and Elena wanted the confrontation to end before Daniel came home.

She began scrubbing.

Margaret looked down at her as if this were proof of something.

Elena muttered:

“Damn old witch.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?”

She grabbed Elena by the hair and yanked her face upward.

Elena winced.

“Let go.”

Margaret shoved her head down toward the basin.

Then the front door opened hard.

Daniel Hart entered.

Dark suit.

Cold face.

His eyes moved over the foyer.

Elena on her knees.

The basin.

Margaret barefoot.

Elena looked up.

Hope arrived before thought.

“Daniel—”

He crossed the marble in three strides.

For one impossible second Elena believed he would help her.

Instead he grabbed her chin.

“Look at me.”

She froze.

Then he slapped her.

Her head snapped sideways.

Silence.

Elena stared at him.

Not fear.

Shock.

Daniel pointed at her belly.

“Whose child is this?”

The question hurt more than the slap.

Elena turned slowly.

Margaret stood behind him.

Smiling.

Small.

Satisfied.

And Elena understood.

This was not a spontaneous accusation.

Someone had prepared him.

She looked back at Daniel.

“Ask your mother what she showed you.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

Then Elena said:

“And ask her why she needed you angry before you saw the original records.”
