Chapter 2 - THE DATE

Daniel had returned from Singapore twelve weeks earlier.
That was the date Margaret built everything around.
He had been away for nine weeks negotiating a resort acquisition.
Margaret called him three days before he flew home.
Her voice was careful.
“I think Elena is hiding something.”
Daniel almost ended the call.
His mother had never liked Elena.
“What now?”
“She’s pregnant.”
Daniel laughed.
“I know.”
“No.”
Margaret paused.
“I mean she was pregnant before you came home.”
Daniel went quiet.
“That’s impossible.”
Margaret sent him a photograph.
An appointment summary from Elena’s obstetric clinic.
The image showed:
GESTATIONAL AGE: 18 WEEKS, 2 DAYS.
The appointment date was twelve weeks after Daniel returned.
He stared.
Eighteen weeks.
Daniel did the simplest math.
If Elena was eighteen weeks pregnant twelve weeks after he came home, then the pregnancy must have begun six weeks before his return.
While he was in Singapore.
Margaret said:
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel did not answer.
The trap worked because the math looked obvious.
It was also wrong.
Obstetric gestational age is generally counted from the first day of the last menstrual period, roughly two weeks before conception in a typical cycle.
And early ultrasound dating carried a margin.
Daniel did not know that.
Margaret did.
Not because she was a doctor.
Because Elena had explained it to her months earlier.
Then Margaret sent another image.
A message from Elena to her sister:
He has no idea yet.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
He assumed:
no idea about the pregnancy.
In reality, the message was sent two days after Daniel returned and referred to a surprise nursery renovation Elena had planned.
Margaret cut off the next line.
I’m telling him after his board dinner.
No fake screenshot.
No forged text.
Selective cropping.
Enough.
Then Margaret sent the final piece.
A hotel receipt under the name:
ADRIAN VALE.
Two guests.
One suite.
Chicago.
Dated while Daniel was in Singapore.
Margaret wrote:
Do you recognize the name?
Daniel did not.
But Elena did.
Adrian Vale was her younger brother’s legal name after adoption by their stepfather.
Margaret knew that too.
She did not say.
She only gave Daniel three fragments.
A gestational-age number.
A cropped message.
May you like
A hotel receipt.
Then let him construct adultery himself.
