Chapter 8 - DANIEL'S SUSPICION

Daniel’s suspicion had another source.

He and Elena had been fighting before Singapore.

Not about infidelity.

About his mother.

Elena wanted stricter boundaries.

Daniel said:

“She’s old.”

Margaret was sixty-three.

Not helpless.

Then Elena said:

“I can’t keep being the one who absorbs her.”

Daniel answered:

“You knew my family was difficult.”

That sentence stayed between them.

During Singapore, they spoke less.

Calls became shorter.

Elena sounded tired.

Daniel felt rejected.

Then Margaret called with “evidence.”

Emotion came before reason.

Daniel did not ask:

Is this medically accurate?

He asked:

Does this explain why Elena feels far away?

Yes.

Suspicion gave loneliness a villain.

Then Daniel checked one thing himself.

The pregnancy app Elena used estimated “32 weeks pregnant.”

He counted backward.

Again wrong.

He never called the obstetrician because that would mean admitting he doubted his wife.

Instead he let doubt ferment privately.

By the time he walked into the foyer, he had spent six weeks rehearsing betrayal in his head.

The sight of Elena kneeling at Margaret’s feet should have broken the story.

Instead he interpreted it through rage.

Margaret had told him:

“If Elena gets cornered, she’ll play victim.”

He saw Elena kneeling.

He saw Margaret standing over her.

And somehow the sentence still won.

That realization destroyed Daniel more than the paternity timeline.

He had not merely believed bad evidence.

He had trained himself not to see what was in front of him.
