Chapter 13 - THE MARRIAGE

Elena did not immediately divorce Daniel.

She separated.

Different house.

Sophie with her.

Daniel had structured parenting time.

No automatic access to Elena.

They began counseling months later.

Not reconciliation first.

Co-parenting.

Then individual accountability.

Daniel said:

“I believed my mother because she knew exactly where my fear lived.”

Elena answered:

“She didn’t create the fear.”

“No.”

“What did?”

Daniel thought.

That Elena would leave.

That she never fully belonged in his family.

That he had chosen someone who might one day choose herself over Hart expectations.

The paternity story gave those fears shape.

Then Elena said:

“You were afraid I would betray you.”

“Yes.”

“So you betrayed me first.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

That was the sentence.

Not the slap alone.

Weeks of surveillance.

Silence.

Suspicion.

Letting Margaret define her.

Then hitting her at the moment she needed protection.

Could they recover?

Elena did not know.

For a long time, neither did Daniel.
