Elena agreed to paternity testing after the baby’s birth.
Not because she owed Margaret proof.
Because she wanted the legal record clean.
Daniel said:
“You don’t have to.”
Elena looked at him.
“I know.”
Then:
“I’m not doing it for you.”
The baby was born at thirty-nine weeks.
A girl.
Healthy.
Seven pounds, four ounces.
Elena named her Sophie Hart.
Daniel was not in the delivery room.
Elena chose Claire.
Daniel waited at the hospital.
He respected the boundary.
Later, an accredited lab confirmed:
Daniel Hart was Sophie’s biological father.
No surprise.
The medical timeline already supported it.
Daniel read the result once.
Then cried.
Not from relief.
From shame that a piece of paper had been allowed to matter more than his wife’s word.
Elena did not comfort him.
That was not her job.
Then Margaret requested a copy through counsel.
Elena refused.
The estate lawyer later obtained whatever documentation was legally necessary for trust administration through normal procedures.
