Chapter 12 - THE ESTATE PLAN
Daniel’s estate plan became the family’s next battleground.
Not because Elena demanded more.
She demanded less secrecy.
Daniel proposed:
a marital trust for Elena,
separate child trust for Sophie,
clear independent trustees,
no discretionary role for Margaret,
and explicit conflict procedures.
Margaret called it exile.
Daniel answered:
“It’s governance.”
She said:
“You’re choosing her over blood.”
Daniel stared.
“Elena is my wife. Sophie is my blood. Stop using that word like it means only you.”
Then Elena interrupted.
“We are not fixing our marriage through estate documents.”
Good.
She hired independent counsel.
Reviewed every provision herself.
She refused one clause that gave Daniel’s chosen trustee too much discretion over housing.
Revised.
She accepted another that limited direct voting control over operating companies.
Reasonable.
The final structure did not make Elena queen of Hartwell.
It made her financially secure without forcing her into corporate governance she did not want.
Then she asked Daniel:
“Would you have done this if the scandal never happened?”
He thought.
“No.”
Honest.
“Why?”
“Because I assumed you trusted whatever I signed.”
