Chapter 3 - THE HOTEL RECEIPT

The hotel receipt came from the Lakeview Grand.

Elena had stayed there for one night.

With Adrian.

Her brother.

Why?

Their father had died suddenly in Milwaukee.

Adrian flew in from Denver.

Elena drove from Chicago.

They met halfway through grief at a hotel because neither could face returning to the old family house that night.

Two adults.

One suite with two rooms.

Paid by Adrian.

No affair.

No secrecy from Daniel, either.

Elena had told him by phone:

“I’m staying with Adrian tonight.”

Daniel remembered.

Or rather, remembered the name after it was explained.

At the time he had been distracted by negotiations.

He heard:

my brother.

Not:

Adrian Vale.

Margaret exploited the gap.

When Daniel returned from Singapore, Elena was already pregnant.

By about six weeks gestational age.

Not by conception age.

He and Elena had been together during a five-day stopover he made in Chicago halfway through the Singapore project.

Daniel had forgotten how the trip actually worked.

He called it:

nine weeks away.

But it was nine weeks assigned to the project, with one short return to Chicago for a board meeting.

Four nights at home.

That detail sat in his calendar.

Margaret knew.

She had attended the same board dinner.

Then Daniel confronted Elena indirectly.

“How far along are you?”

“About eighteen weeks.”

“When did you know?”

“Around six.”

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

Elena stared.

“I told you the week you came back.”

He knew that.

The question had come from suspicion, not memory.

Then Margaret added pressure.

“Maybe she told you when she knew it would look safe.”

Daniel did not accuse Elena immediately.

He watched.

That was almost worse.

He checked her phone.

Asked strange questions about dates.

Stopped touching her.

Then apologized for stress.

Elena thought Singapore had changed him.

May you like

It had.

Just not in the way she understood.
