Chapter 7 - THE ORIGINAL RECORDS

Daniel agreed to meet at Daniel Cho’s office.

Elena’s attorney.

Not his.

That mattered.

Elena brought:

her prenatal records,

travel calendar,

hotel receipt,

family obituary,

messages with Adrian,

Daniel’s own board schedule.

No drama.

Just paper.

Daniel looked at the early ultrasound first.

Estimated gestational age:

7 weeks, 1 day.

Date:

two weeks after Daniel’s return from his mid-project Chicago stopover.

Then the obstetric note:

Conception timing consistent with intercourse approximately five weeks prior, subject to normal dating variation.

Daniel stared.

Five weeks prior.

He had been home.

Then Elena placed his travel calendar down.

Board dinner.

Four nights in Chicago.

Then:

the hotel receipt.

“Adrian Vale is my brother.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He remembered the funeral call.

Remembered saying:

Stay with your brother.

Then Elena showed the full text thread.

He has no idea yet.

Next line:

I’m telling him after his board dinner. I want one happy surprise this year.

Daniel went pale.

Then:

Margaret’s screenshot.

Cropped after the first sentence.

He looked at Elena.

“She showed me only this.”

“I know.”

Then Elena asked:

“Why didn’t you ask me?”

He had no answer.

She pushed.

“Why did you hit me before you asked me?”

Silence.

Then the hardest:

“Why was your mother’s version easier to believe than mine?”

Daniel looked down.

Because Margaret had spent years telling him Elena wanted:

status,

security,

access,

inheritance.

And Daniel had never fully rejected the narrative.

He had only believed he was above it.

Until fear made it useful.
