Chapter 6 - THE HOSPITAL

Daniel’s slap left mild redness.

Margaret’s basin left a swollen mark on Elena’s forehead.

No blood.

No fracture.

But Elena was eight months pregnant.

She developed abdominal tightening after the confrontation.

Her obstetrician told her to come in.

Daniel tried to drive.

Elena refused.

Her sister Claire came instead.

At the hospital, fetal monitoring was reassuring.

No placental injury.

No preterm labor at that moment.

Elena had elevated stress and dehydration.

She would be observed for several hours.

Then the nurse asked:

“Do you feel safe at home?”

Elena almost said yes.

Habit.

Then thought of:

the basin,

Margaret’s hand in her hair,

Daniel’s slap,

his question.

“No.”

That answer changed everything.

Hospital social work documented the disclosure.

Police took a report.

Elena did not minimize.

Margaret struck her with the basin.

Pulled her hair.

Forced humiliating contact.

Daniel slapped her.

No invented attempted murder.

No exaggerated fetal harm.

Just what happened.

Then Daniel arrived.

Security stopped him because Elena had requested no visitors except Claire.

He called.

She did not answer.

Texted:

Please let me explain.

Then:

I was wrong to hit you.

Then:

But I need to know about the baby.

Elena stared at the screen.

Even now.

Apology.

Then accusation.

Claire looked over her shoulder.

“You don’t owe him paternity proof tonight.”

Elena said:

“I know.”

Then she opened her prenatal portal.

Scrolled to the first ultrasound.

Dating estimate.

Conception window.

Appointment notes.

She smiled without humor.

“I’m not doing this tonight.”

May you like

“Good.”

“I’m doing it tomorrow.”
