Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER ELI REMEMBERED WITHOUT KNOWING
Eli’s earliest memories were sensory: lavender soap, a humming voice, and a woman tracing circles on his palm. Daniel believed they came from Claire before the crash.
The hidden videos suggested some came later.
Diane began bringing Eli to Carol when he was four. She hoped his presence would trigger memories useful for signatures and guardianship statements. At first, Carol comforted him. She called him Eli once and sang Claire’s old bedtime song.
Then Diane began locking the red door.
She told Eli the woman became dangerous when confused. In reality, the lock prevented either from leaving while cameras recorded prompts.
Hannah attended enough sessions to know the door was bolted.
She insisted she objected privately. Texts showed she asked Diane to “make it less frightening” rather than stop.
“I thought Mom needed proof,” Hannah said during a court interview. “If Carol remembered, we could know what to do.”
The child advocate replied, “You used a four-year-old as a diagnostic tool.”
Hannah cried. Her love for Eli was real; so was her willingness to burden him to preserve her life.
Eli asked Daniel whether the breathing lady was his mother.
“She may be,” Daniel said. “Adults are checking carefully.”
“If she is, does Hannah stop being my mom?”

Daniel resisted an easy answer. “Hannah helped raise you. What she did matters, and what she did wrong matters. No one disappears just because we learn another truth.”
Eli whispered, “Grandma makes people disappear.”
