Chapter 7 - THE WIFE WHO CALLED IT PROTECTION
Hannah finally admitted helping move Carol to a rented cabin.
She said Diane feared institutional abuse. Carol panicked around strangers, and the court’s guardian might force testing or hospitalization.
“You violated a court order,” Daniel said.
“To protect a sick woman.”
“Or to prevent her from speaking.”
Hannah reacted as if struck. “I have spent six years raising Claire’s child. Do you think I wanted her alive?”
The terrible phrasing exposed the answer she meant to deny.
Hannah had built a marriage, home, and maternal identity around Claire’s absence. Carol’s possible identity threatened all three.
She surrendered the cabin address in exchange for counsel. Officers found it empty. Medicine, restraints used for safe transport, and several dark coats remained. No evidence showed physical assault.
A wall camera had recorded sessions between Carol and Eli. Most files were deleted. One fragment showed Diane prompting Carol to sign a property deed while Eli cried offscreen.
“Your son needs a home,” Diane told her. “Write Claire Carter and he stays safe.”
Carol gripped the pen but did not sign.
Hannah appeared in the doorway. She did not intervene.
When Daniel watched, grief became rage.
