Chapter 16 - THE GUARDIAN WHO ASKED CAROL’S PERMISSION
Elena Ruiz located Carol through a legal-aid clinic. The woman had contacted them after seeing news of the trust fight. She refused to reveal her address until Diane’s authority was formally terminated.
Elena did not promise a reunion or demand DNA. She explained available choices: protected housing, independent medical review, voluntary identity testing, no-contact orders, and counsel separate from every Carter and Walker.
Carol agreed to medical care and a private interview. She did not consent to meet Daniel.
Daniel struggled with that boundary.
“If she is Claire, I’ve waited six years.”
Rebecca answered, “She has spent six years without control over who enters her room. Your grief does not create access.”
He accepted the correction.
Carol gave a fresh handwriting sample and chose to submit DNA under a sealed protocol. Results would go first to her lawyer and guardian. She could decide when others learned.
She asked only one question about Eli: “Is he still carrying the stars?”
The reference to his backpack was not public.
Daniel wept when Elena relayed it with Carol’s permission.
Diane filed to block testing, claiming Carol lacked capacity to consent. Independent physicians found she understood the purpose, possible outcomes, and privacy implications.
The judge denied Diane’s motion.
Before results returned, Carol disappeared from protected housing.
She left voluntarily after receiving a photograph of Eli outside his school.
