Chapter 18 - THE FALSE EMERGENCY
Paramedics found no record of a call from Diane’s address. Hannah claimed her mother refused emergency services.
Daniel informed Elena Ruiz and police. They lacked enough evidence to enter immediately but established observation near the house.
Hannah discovered the surveillance and changed plans. She told Daniel child services required a supervised family meeting at Diane’s home the next Thursday.
The document she showed him bore the correct agency logo and case number.
Eli’s attorney had received no notice.
The order was forged.
Daniel pretended to believe it while investigators traced the file to Diane’s former attorney. The attorney said Hannah requested a “sample scheduling form” and later altered it herself.
Hannah had moved beyond following her mother. She was now manufacturing authority.
Prosecutors asked Daniel to continue cooperating while they documented the planned session. Eli’s attorney refused to use the child as bait.
The court authorized no visit.
Daniel canceled. Hannah panicked and accused him of trying to steal Eli from the only mother he remembered.
“This is not about Claire,” she said. “Mom says Carol will sign the trust back if she sees Eli one last time. Then everything ends.”
There it was: money, identity, and family fused into a single justification.
Hannah left the house that night. A tracker installed under warrant showed her traveling to Diane’s.
Mrs. Calder’s camera recorded a woman in a dark coat arriving twenty minutes later.
