Chapter 13 - THE MONEY HANNAH MOVED
Naomi traced $860,000 from Eli’s trust into Night Sky Holdings and then into an account Hannah controlled.
Hannah said the funds paid Carol’s housing and medical care because revealing her identity would have frozen access. Invoices supported about half the spending.
The remainder funded the Carter home renovation, Hannah’s consulting business, and Diane’s legal fees.
Hannah claimed Diane described those transfers as reimbursement. She had signed without reviewing source accounts.
Daniel heard his own old defense in her answer. He too had relied on trusted family professionals when convenience favored him.
The difference was notice. Hannah knew the money might belong to Eli and continued after he showed fear.
The probate court froze her accounts. Prosecutors investigated theft and conspiracy but did not arrest her immediately. Intent, coercion, and tracing required proof.
Hannah responded through the press. She portrayed herself as a stepmother abandoned once Daniel believed his missing wife might return. She released family photographs showing years of genuine care for Eli.
The photographs were real.
Public opinion split. Some called Daniel cruel for erasing Hannah’s motherhood. Others called Hannah a kidnapper.
Daniel issued no counterattack. Eli’s attorney asked everyone to stop using the child’s image.
Then Hannah released an audio clip in which Daniel said, “If Claire is alive, Hannah has no place in my house.”
