Chapter 8 - THE ASTRONAUT BACKPACK
Eli refused to sleep without his astronaut backpack. Daniel assumed it provided comfort until the child advocate asked what he kept inside.
“The lady’s things.”
The backpack held a plastic medicine cup, a brass key, and a folded page bearing a shaky signature: Claire C—.
Carol had pushed the items beneath the red door during one session. Eli hid them because Diane threatened to send him away if he spoke.
The brass key opened a safe-deposit box rented by Thomas Walker. A court-supervised search found Claire’s original driver’s license, Carol’s facility bracelet, property ledgers, and a sealed DNA kit never submitted to a laboratory.
The kit’s chain of custody was incomplete. It could not establish identity without a new consensual sample.
There was also a video recorded by Thomas before his death.
He admitted finding Claire alive weeks after the crash in a rural hospital under an unknown-patient number. Diane persuaded him to conceal her while memory returned, arguing Daniel might be responsible for the crash.
Months became years. Claire’s confusion allowed Diane to obtain emergency guardianship under the Carol Wells identity. Thomas said he intended to correct the record but feared criminal exposure.
“Diane no longer wants Claire to remember,” he said. “She wants Claire to remain legally useful.”

On the safe-deposit inventory, one item was missing: a second key tagged Calder.
