Chapter 19 - THE SESSION POLICE COULD NOT SEE

Police obtained a warrant the next morning. The house was empty.
The red office contained a camera, two chairs, and freshly signed trust papers. The signature read Claire Carter.
Video storage had been removed, but technicians recovered a partial audio file. A woman refused to sign until Diane promised Eli would remain with Daniel. Hannah said, “Sign it, and Mom leaves all of us alone.”
The signature transferred Night Sky properties to Hannah and named Diane continuing trustee during Claire’s “voluntary absence.”
Priya froze the transfer before recording.
Hannah contacted Daniel through counsel. She said Carol signed freely and then left with Diane for protected housing.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Her lawyer offered to surrender the original deed in exchange for immunity from financial charges. Prosecutors refused blanket immunity but offered to consider cooperation.
Hannah produced the missing camera drive.
The complete recording showed Diane threatening to place Eli in Dr. Porter’s residential program if Carol refused. Hannah objected twice but ultimately handed over the pen.
Carol signed under coercion.
Near the end, Diane left the room to answer a call. Hannah leaned toward Carol.
“If you are Claire, why didn’t you come back sooner?”
The woman answered, “Because your mother made me believe Daniel wanted me dead.”
Hannah turned off the camera.

She later told prosecutors Carol asked for help escaping. Hannah led her through the rear door and gave her a dark coat.
If true, Hannah had committed betrayal and then assisted escape. Neither action erased the other.
