Chapter 17 - THE THREAT HANNAH SAID SHE DID NOT SEND
The photograph came from Hannah’s phone.
She admitted taking it months earlier but denied printing or writing the threat. Metadata showed the image passed through Diane’s laptop.
Diane blamed an unknown hacker.
Investigators found the printer pattern matched Diane’s home printer. Her attorneys argued household access included staff, Hannah, and Carol herself.
The threat accomplished its purpose. Carol contacted Diane and agreed to return for “one final family session” if Eli stayed with Daniel.
Diane scheduled the session at her house without telling the court.
Hannah learned of it through a message from her mother. She did not inform Daniel. She said she planned to attend and safely bring Carol out afterward.
“Why not call Elena Ruiz?”
“Mom said she would disappear forever if police came.”
Hannah still responded to Diane’s control by creating private plans of her own.
The DNA results arrived meanwhile. Elena sealed them because Carol had not authorized disclosure before leaving. All anyone knew was that the laboratory completed testing.
Diane’s lawyers announced the result disproved Claire’s identity. They had not seen it.
The false certainty revealed strategy: shape public belief before evidence became available.
Mrs. Calder’s camera captured Diane preparing the house. Workers reinstalled the red door.
Daniel saw the footage and requested an emergency search warrant. The judge required current evidence that Carol was inside.
At that moment, Hannah told Daniel her mother needed help with a burst pipe and asked him to bring Eli over while she handled a medical appointment.
The safety order still prohibited it.
