Chapter 21 - THE CHILD WHO HEARD THE PLAN

Eli remembered Diane speaking on the phone during a locked-room session. She said they needed “Danny’s voice and the boy’s fear” before crossing north.
Investigators believed Diane planned a final video in which Carol identified Daniel as abusive and authorized Diane to relocate. Eli’s distress would make the claim appear credible.
Hannah knew Diane might attempt another session. She warned Daniel that her mother would create a family emergency to bring Eli to the house.
“Do not believe any message from me unless I say Orion,” she said.
Orion was the constellation on Eli’s backpack.
Daniel asked why Hannah had not used the code earlier.
“Because earlier I still thought I could save my mother, Carol, Eli, and my marriage without choosing between them.”
“You chose every time you stayed silent.”
Hannah accepted it.
Prosecutors prepared a controlled operation using adult officers, not Eli. They sent Diane a message saying Hannah would deliver trust originals if Carol appeared. Diane did not respond.
Instead, Daniel received a call from Dr. Porter’s office claiming Eli’s child-services evaluation had been rescheduled at Diane’s home due to an agency emergency.
The caller knew the correct caseworker, file number, and safety-plan language.
Eli heard the address and began shaking.
“Daddy, please don’t make me go.”
Daniel assured him he would not.
Then Hannah arrived holding what appeared to be a court-stamped order. She said refusal could let Diane claim Daniel obstructed treatment.
