Chapter 20 - THE MARRIAGE THAT NEVER LEGALLY BEGAN
The family court ruled Daniel’s marriage to Hannah void from the beginning if Claire was legally alive on the wedding date. The judge delayed final declaration until identity evidence could be presented with Carol’s consent.
Hannah argued she entered the marriage in good faith. Records showed suspicion, not certainty. Good-faith spouse protections could preserve some property rights even if the marriage was void.
Daniel wanted her removed from the home immediately. Eli’s therapist urged a structured transition. Hannah had been a daily caregiver for most of his life, and sudden disappearance could compound trauma.
The court allowed supervised letters but no direct contact while witness-coaching allegations remained.
Hannah wrote Eli an apology that mixed accountability with pressure.
I should have listened when you were afraid. I also hope someday you remember all the nights I stayed when nobody else could make you sleep.
The therapist did not give it to him. The second sentence asked a child to balance harm against care before he was ready.
Hannah revised the letter:
I should have listened. What happens next is for adults to handle. You do not need to protect my feelings.
Eli chose to hear that version once. He did not respond.
Meanwhile, Naomi found Diane’s financial escape plan. She liquidated personal accounts, booked two seats under false names, and purchased medication through a clinic near the Canadian border.
